Re: Facebook buys Oculus VR for 2 billion + M$ gives out sou

Microsoft believes the children are our future, and to prove it, it's teamed up with the Computer History Museum to make source code available for two groundbreaking programs: MS-DOS and Word for Windows. In a blog post that outlined the deal, Roy Levin, managing director of Microsoft Research, said the company granted the museum permission to make the code public for MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 and Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a, "... to help future generations of technologists better understand the roots of personal computing." MS DOS, originally code named "Chess," took root in 1980 when IBM asked Microsoft to produce an OS to run on its computers. Word for Windows was released in 1989, and with in four years had captured half of the revenue of the word-processing market, according to Levin.

Both programs marked the beginnings not only of great successes for Microsoft, but also the PC industry as we know it today. The museum's Chairman, Len Shustek, had this to say about the effort: "We think preserving historic source code like these two programs is key to understanding how software has evolved from primitive roots to become a crucial part of our civilization." The move marks an ongoing effort to make landmark software code available to the public; the museum released the source for the 1989 version of Photoshop early last year

NVIDIA's next-generation GPU is called Pascal, and it's smaller, faster and more efficient
BY SEAN BUCKLEY @SEANICCUS MARCH 25TH, 2014 AT 1:13PM ET

What comes after Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell? Pascal, according to NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. That's the name of the company's next-generation GPU, and Huang says it'll be smaller, faster and more efficient, naturally. "As we compute more, we have to move more data around," he said, speaking at NVIDIA's GPU technology conference in San Jose today. "It's the data bottleneck." He's talking about how the speed at which data is exchanged between the CPU and GPU limits the processor's ability to perform. He's also talking about how NVIDIA hopes to solve the issue, introducing NVLink, a chip-to-chip communication technology (a new socket) that promises to outpace PCIe communication speeds by a factor of five (but up to 12). The company says the PCIe standard probably isn't going away, but is confident that its dedicated GPU socket will allow it to leapfrog existing bottlenecks. Although NVLink seems to be designed to speed up GPU and CPU communication, Huang says it also improves data transfer between GPUs -- meaning that graphics cards linked in SLI could see a performance boost, too.

Of course, speed, power and efficiency usually come at the price of physical size. NVIDIA says it's working on that. "The GPU is already the biggest chip in the world," Huang says. "The interface is already extremely wide. How do we solve that problem?" His answer is 3D memory packaging. "We're going to, for the first time, build chips on top of other chips." By using a chip-on-wafer 3D integration, NVIDIA can build smaller GPUs that are four times as energy efficient as today's chips. The company is also working on other technologies to improve its next-generation GPU, including a unified memory system that will eliminate the need for developers to split resources between CPU and GPU memory. Exciting? Sure, but don't expect to pick up a Pascal-powered laptop any time soon: NVIDIA doesn't plan to ship the GPU until 2016.

its a whopping 3,000 dollars!!!!!!!!!

Continuing the TITAN legacy of supercomputer-inspired performance, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled the GeForce GTX TITAN Z today at our annual GPU Technology Conference.

Built around two Kepler GPUs and 12GB of dedicated frame buffer memory, TITAN Z is engineered for next-generation 5K and multi-monitor gaming.

With two GK110 chips, TITAN Z is powered by a total of 5,760 processing cores, or 2,880 cores per GPU.

“If you’re in desperate need of a supercomputer that you need to fit under your desk, we have just the card for you,” Jen-Hsun said.

GeForce GTX TITAN Z Graphics Card

Unlike traditional dual-GPU cards, Titan Z’s twin GPUs are tuned to run at the same clock speed, and with dynamic power balancing. So neither GPU creates a performance bottleneck.

And that performance is delivered in a card that is cool and quiet, rather than hot and loud. Low-profile components and ducted baseplate channels minimize turbulence and improves acoustic quality.

So if you want to build the ultimate ultra-high definition gaming rig that can harness the power of quad GPUs working in tandem, TITAN Z is the perfect graphics card.

Notch cancels Minecraft for Oculus Rift, but other developers still have interest

http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/25/notc ... minecraft/

It looks as if the Facebook and Oculus deal already has its first casualty. Minecraft mastermind Markus "Notch" Persson has said that he'll no longer be developing his game for the VR headset following Zuckerberg's latest purchase. "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus," he tweeted. "I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."

Seeing that arguably one of the biggest indie developers (and one of Oculus' earliest supporters) has cancelled a project is pretty major. What do others in the indie scene make of the news, though? Those we spoke to seemed pretty happy actually.

"I think this is a smart move for Oculus," Rami Ismail of Vlambeer told us. "While they're super well known in the tech scene, they need a backer with huge public mind-share now that Sony is entering the market. Facebook is a huge established tech presence, has amazing engineers, hardware, software, public mindshare and lots of money.

"I mean, I am not a big fan of exits as a business model at all, but in light of not really having a profitable business model, it makes total sense for them to exit," he said.

The developer behind the Rift's highest profile game, EVE: Valkyrie, and the one Oculus trots out time and again when there's new hardware to show off has nothing but praise as well.

"We're very excited for our friends and colleagues at Oculus," David Reid, CCP Games' CMO told us. "We share their vision about the future of VR and gaming and are looking forward to participating in the consumer launch of the Oculus Rift with EVE: Valkyrie."

Indie publishers are bullish, too. "Ultimately if Facebook allows the Oculus platform to get into the hands of more people, gamers or otherwise, then this acquisition will prove to be a good thing," Devolver Digital' partner Nigel Lowrie told us. "We've seen what this next generation of VR technology from Oculus, Valve, and Sony can do and how it can change the game so anything that achieves a greater awareness and broader reach for video games as mainstream entertainment and pushes new technology forward in new ways is ace."

http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2014/03/25/shield-199/

NVIDIA SHIELD was designed to be the ultimate portable for serious gamers. To achieve that mark, we engineered SHIELD with the most advanced and purpose built technologies available, including a powerful Tegra 4 processor, console grade controller, and amazing bass reflex speakers. SHIELD was designed to be an evolving gaming system, providing expanded features, functionality and gameplay enhancements over time. For our upcoming software update, we have provided several important improvements.

The biggest change: updates to our GameStream technology that helps SHIELD adapt to the way enthusiasts like to game.

Since the launch of SHIELD, gamers have wanted to play their PC games outside the home. With the upcoming software release, we are making that a reality with remote streaming support – coming in beta. For complete remote access to your PC, we’ve built in wake-on-LAN support to allow gamers to remotely wake their PC from sleep mode and remote login support to let you log into a locked PC from SHIELD.

Giving gamers even more ways to play PC games on SHIELD, new Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support lets them pair their SHIELD with an HDTV in console mode and play their favorite keyboard and mouse PC games such as World of WarCraft, Civilization V and League of Legends on their big screens.

And notebook support – also in beta – lets gamers stream to SHIELD from a GeForce GTX-powered notebook PC, including all GeForce GTX 800M, GTX 700M and select GTX 600M GPUs.

Now with official support for over 100 PC games, including spring’s biggest hits such as Titanfall, GameStream provides an even more incredible way to enjoy your favorite games away from the PC.

Beyond GameStream, a new user interface on our TegraZone app lets you find games with just a touch of the NVIDIA button built into every SHIELD. And we’re making it easier to play more Android games the way you want, by adding a new user interface to SHIELD’s Gamepad Mapper, which lets you play thousands of games built for touch on SHIELD’s console-grade controls.

Finally, SHIELD will be getting the latest version of Google’s Android operating system – Android 4.4.2, also known as KitKat. The result is a quick, fluid experience that continues to give SHIELD users access to the rich ecosystem of Android games, apps and utilities. The upshot: in just eight months since SHIELD was first launched, our handheld gaming platform is more powerful, and flexible, than ever.

The software release will be hitting devices next week on April 2. Haven’t picked up a SHIELD yet? To celebrate the software upgrade, we’re promoting SHIELD at just $199, starting today through the end of April.

Re: Facebook buys Oculus VR for 2 billion + M$ gives out sou

Farking Facebook, I swear I'm the only person not on there because I don't need strangers and companies knowing what I eat nor when I shit it out. I knew this was bad news when I read it this morning, but now it really sucks what with the loss of a potential Minecraft port.

On the positive side; at least Facebook has unlimited resources (money hats) to throw behind the Oculus Rift.

Consider this as well; this means that John Carmack (the Godfather of FPS gaming) is now working for Facebook. Its like a bad fever-dream that I cannot wake from.
